"I had the lights off," said Barowenski.  He was staring down into his 
whisky.  "But ... between my playing ... I went out onto the terrace.  To 
breathe the night air.  And for a cifarette, yes.  It must have happened 
then!"

"I remember the music stopping when we were all in the darkness with the 
Warden," said Oswald slowly, "but I would have thought it was for no more 
than a minute or so.  Not enough time to cross to the window, step out onto 
the terrace without disturbing the blackout, smoke a cigarette and return."
