> Lucinda reported the findings.
"The fork isn't scratched at all, is it?" Pamela asked, looking up from
her work. "I was only thinking... the murderer, to keep from tearing up
his hands on whatever he used... could have wrapped the ends 'round a
tuning fork and turned it... a sort of makeshift garrote, I suppose. But
it would take awful presence of mind to do such a thing. I daresay I'm
quite wrong." From her tone, she certainly hoped so.
> "Are there any needle marks on her arms?" she asked.

> "Perhaps we should look in her handbag," suggested Lucinda.
"Perhaps you'd do that? If you don't mind," said Pamela. "We'd make
something of a mess. Now, I wonder... marking her arms, it can't have
been good for her career... I heard some wretched stories from one young
man..." Carefully, Pamela pulled at the lashes of Nola's left eye, upper
and lower, to examine the skin beneath for lesions.
