There was a thick caret in the centre of tha hall, with wooden parqueting
flooring either side. If someone was careless (or struggling) going in or
out, it was quite possible marks might show on the floor. But there was no
sign at all of this, as Cyril had said.

Philip headed downstairs, with the others (presumably) in tow.
[Mel, anyone at or near the front entrance who's obviously with the UXB team
or the air wardens?]
The hall was, as they ight expect, in complete darkness. However, when they
opened the door of the flats there was a sudden shout.
"Oi! Stay inside! Haven't you lot bin warned, eh?"
It was another ARP warden on the nearest corner of the street.
