"From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties
and things that go bang in the night, good Lord
deliver us, *especially* on Christmas Eve," Pamela
murmured.

"Indeed, darling," Nicola said through the darkness.
Summoning a smile, even though no one could see it,
she lifted her glass and said, "Well, I don't know if
the three of you will indulge me, but my family always
makes a traditional toast on Christmas Eve and there's
no reason why a little darkness should keep us from
enjoying ourselves." She cleared her throat and
recited, "Here's to me and here's to you and here's to
love and laughter. I'll be true as long as you, and
not a single moment after." She held her glass where
she estimated the center of their circle was so that
the others might clink glasses with her.
