Lucinda Skeffington-Nottle turned as they came in.
"Oh - is the lift working again now?" she asked. "Who was stuck?"
"Not me," drawled a voice from the door.
It was Nola Diamond, the movie actress, radiant in dark green velvet.
"Nicola," she said, in a tone devoid of expression. "Darling." She
advanced into the room, her hands held out towards the American, drawing her
close o kiss the air either side of her face. "How lovely to see you. God,
I need a drink."
She moved towards Braham, Marjorie, Oswald and Warren where they stood by
the drinks table. Marty Fitzroy - and everyone else present in the room -
she ignored totally.
"A martini," she announced. "With just a whisper of vermouth. Dry,
darling, dry."
To one side, Anoton Barowenski adjusted his white tie nervously.
