The situation was now that the two ladies - Mrs Evans and Miss Mauberley - 
were inside the lift between the fourth and fifth floors but, thanks to the 
design and structure of the lift, could clearly see and hear all that was 
happening.  Philip and Pamela had come up from the first floor (and more 
lately the third floor), and so were slightly below the lift, while Michael 
Coldstream-Briggs had followed them up.

Hodges and Beaman were above, and sould see the problem - a chain had come 
loose on one of the cogs.  It needed to be reattached, tightened and oiled.
