"Evil's a vague term," chastised Suhuy, crawling up on the cot to sit at
Dot's feet. "And it implies 'good', as a diametric opposite, is an effective
weapon. Not so. Most cases, evil will feed upon good, glutting itself on
desecration and corruption. We need something that can combat what we've
seen. Hurt it."
He thought a moment, then looked sidelong at Dot. "Order?"
+++++
Asha nodded at Suhuy's words. It still amazed her that the man could
vacillate so between brilliance and senility.
"Yes," she agreed, "to limit your view of the entity to 'evil' will
compromise your efforts. The reason that it referred to me as 'tainted' is
because I have used Chaos." She winced as one of her wings fluttered
unconsciously, a spasm of pain marring her perfect features. Gathering
herself, she sat gingerly to continue. "I believe it wanted you because of
the fact that it cannot exist on this plane for long in it's current state-
it needs something securely grounded in
the Blood of Amber to stabilise its form. A non-reactive substance if you
will." She looked towards Mandor and Suhuy both, to see if there was a
reaction or interjection before she continued, suddenly conscious of the
fact that these two could write a thesis on the subject she dared lecture
on.
"Make no mistake, there is a malevolence present in the entity- but that
actually makes it *less* dangerous. Basically, all you are trying to do is
to gain a sample- remember that first and foremost," she cautioned, concern
evident in her voice. "Then, look for a pattern to its forms and attacks.
This pattern will let you close enough to do what you need to do. No matter
*how* powerful it seems, it will have this weakness, and it will be all the
more obvious because it is attempting to appear to be totally chaotic."
"Other than that, you have what you need. You're actually more prepared
than most- you are not bound by the expectations of the medium- your
innovative approaches should more than make up for your lack of experience."
She smiled reassuringly. "I'll give you all of the backup that I can, but
in the end, it's your show."
She looked again to Mandor and Suhuy. "Did either of you have anything to
add?"
Suhuy was back to poking at buttons at the side of Dot's cot, eyes shining
with boiling fascination. He turned his head when he felt Asha's gaze upon
him. "We'll need to pack a lunch, but no, I think we're ready. You are
coming, aren't you? I like the wings. It's been too long since I had wings."
Dot looked at Asha in thought, "so, do I catch it in the buffer then? Or...
something else?" She glanced at Suhuy, "and we should go get it before
setting up the lab, yes?"
Though the conversation was between the three of them, Asha was very
conscious of Mandor and Grey's scrutinizing stares- though for two separate
reason, both were very intense.
Focussing her attention back on Dot, she nodded in answer. "That would be
safer than anything I could give you, though I will transfer a few new
routines to you when we're ready."
Dot looked down at her leg, which was nicely repaired. "How long will it
take until then. I'm... a little anxious to go back."
"That," Asha replied, catching Dot's eyes with her own gaze, "depends
entirely upon you. It is a mental preparation that you must make- not a
physical. I'm of the school of thought that says that nothing can prepare
you for your first run- not anything anyone says or does or shows you. But,
I don't want to push you faster than you're ready to go."
Light played within her eyes as Dot looked back, her vision going beyond
what was present. Her lips moved curiously as she spoke, "vrooom."
Suhuy sulked over his button pressing, casting a red glinting eye over his
shoulder.
"It's not fair. These Amberites get to do everything."
