Dot followed, sweat beginning to bead on her as she continued her focused
assault on the cloud before her. One of her arms spasmed as she walked, but
she took no notice.
Mandor was following after at a marked distance, keeping a restraining hand
on Suhuy.
Someone who never owned a dog might have said that Suhuy was acting like an
overeager puppy, straining at his leash. Puppies, however, could be trained.
There were doubts about Suhuy.
"Do you think she'll make it?"
+++++
Suhuy's question seemed on the verge of being answered as Dot and Grey made
the agonizing trip through the lobby of the skyscraper. They had not taken
this way into the building when Grey first brought Dot and Suhuy here, and
Dot could easily see why. The area was littered with the detrius of what
seemed like an apocalyptic battle- casings of spent ammunition
littered the floor, and the smell of death hung heavy in the air. A layer
of ash and soot was caked on the floor, and as they walked through the room,
small clouds of particles punctuated their every step. By the time they
reached the glassteel doors, the air was thick with dust.
Grey continued to motion Dot forward, even as they reached the outside. The
sky was as dark as usual, the diffused sunlight only barely filtering
through the cast everything in deep shadow. The destruction was especially
thorough in the area in front of the building, looking like something had
flattened everything in a large circular area- an area that Dot was now in
the center of...
Grey grabbed her hand, pulling her back towards the building. "Run, Girl!"
he commanded, even as he pulled her behind him. As tired as she was, the
sound of the air burning far above them gave her limbs speed...
Her arms pumped in a way that she was unused to, her brain working to
optimize the aerodynamics for running, and putting them into practice at the
speed of thought. Somewhere, somehow, she felt a pulse... she felt alive.
Suhuy looked up to the sky, endlessly intrigued. On a scrap of his dressing
he scribbled notes, and muttered under his breath.
Apparently the order to 'run' didn't apply to him.
And then he was seized, by the neck of his robe. Mandor ran his over the
ground almost effortlessly. Those observed Mandor's gliding gait might also
have observed that he actually lifted up and over the ground, moves a with a
speed that suggested to those watching cybernetic enhancements - although
there was actually a rather different explanation.
